Glossary

Dungeons & Dragons (sometimes called ‘D&D’)

Only the best game in the world! D&D is a Role Playing game or RPG. It’s essentially group storytelling, led by Game Master or Dungeon Master, where many outcomes are determined by a randomized roll of the dice. One of the beautiful things about D&D, is that it offers a sandbox world, where players can do whatever they want! Of course, as the Dungeon Master allows. D&D was created in the 1970’s by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson.

Natural 20 (sometimes called ‘Nat 20’)

When rolling dice, a roll that actually reads 20. This is excellent to roll. If you’re attacking, a natural 20 gives you a ‘critical hit’, or double damage.

Natural 1 (sometimes called ‘Nat 1’)

A critical fail. When rolling dice, a roll that actually reads 1. This is bad. This is very bad. The Dungeon Master can add something terrible if he chooses when a player rolls a natural 1.

Critical Hit (also called a ‘Crit’)

A critical hit is usually double damage. It usually happens when the attacking player or creature rolls a Natural 20.

Advantage

When rolling dice, the player can roll two 20 sided dice, and take the HIGHER of the two rolls. Usually very helpful. A good thing! (unless your enemy has advantage!) Then it’s bad. Essentially, advantage is good for whoever has it!

Disadvantage

When rolling dice with disadvantage, the player must roll two 20 sided dice, and take the LOWER of the two rolls. Usually very helpful. A good thing! (unless your enemy has advantage!) Then it’s bad. Essentially, advantage is good for whoever has it!

5e (also called ‘5th Edition’)

This is an abbreviation for “Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition”. This is the rule set that we follow in Fractured roll; the most current rule set for Dungeons & Dragons. You can find the basic rules here for free!

RPG (also called ‘Role Playing Game’)

A game where players take on Characters or ‘Roles’. Some players choose to “Role Play” or talk in the voice of the character, where other players choose to only describe or narrate their character’s actions. Both methods are completely valid. In Fractured Roll, we lean towards Role Playing in the character’s voice. It’s more fun for use, and we think it makes for a better show!

Dungeon Master (also called ‘DM’ or called ‘Game Master’)

The Dungeon Master is the boss. He/she interprets the rules, describes the world, and plays all NPCs (Non-Player Characters) in the story. The dungeon master sets the tone for the game. He also controls all monsters, and can basically do whatever he/she wants! One of the things I love about Dungeons & Dragons, is that the rules encourage DM’s
